Now play the A-Major scale on
your guitar or keyboard:
Ok, now instead of starting on the A,
play this same A-major scale - but start on the B and
play all the way through till you reach B again...
...and
again, instead of starting on the A, play this same A-major scale -
but start on the
C# and
play all the way through till you reach C# again...
...and
again, instead of starting on the A, play this same A-major scale -
but start on the
D and
play all the way through till you reach D again...
...and again, instead of starting on the A, play this same A-major
scale - but start on the E and
play all the way through till you reach E again...
...and
again, instead of starting on the A, play this same A-major scale -
but start on the F# and
play all the way through till you reach F# again...
...and
again, instead of starting on the A, play this same A-major scale -
but start on the G# and
play all the way through till you reach G# again...
So what just happened here?
You're still playing the A-Major scale, but you only played different
"modes" of the scale.

Now don't get
confused by what I'm about to say...
When someone
tells you to play A-Ionian, they basically want you to play the
A-Major scale (since simply the Ionian mode is just another name for
the major scale!).
...so if
they asked you to play A-Ionian, then you would just play the
regular A major scale.
If they ask you to play B-Dorian, they basically want you to play the
A-Major scale starting and ending on B
C#-Phrygian?
They basically want you to play the A
Major scale starting and ending on C#
Don't worry if
you don't understand yet...I guarantee everything will be made
more clear in the
following chapters.
