Suppose I wanted to
play a song in the key of C-Dorian, I'll first look under the
"Dorian" column for C...and then write out the C-Dorian scale
(I've highlighted it in yellow in the chart above). Also, remember
to start on the C, since this is a C-Dorian song:
C - D
- D# - F - G - A - A#
Next I'll make a list
of all chords in this scale...
|
C |
D |
D# |
F |
G |
A |
A# |
|
(Minor) |
(Minor) |
(Major) |
Major
(dom7) |
(Minor) |
Minor
(dim/m7b5) |
(Major) |
|
I |
II |
III |
IV |
V |
VI |
VII |
So we have determined
that in the key of C-Dorian, we have the following chords:
- C minor
- D minor
- D# major
- F dom7
- G minor
- A minor
- A# major
Now just use any chord
progression. As an example let's incorporate the following common
chord progression:
I - III - IV - I - IV - I -
V - I
...this will give
us...
Cminor
- D#major - Fdom7 - Cminor - Fdom7 - Cminor - Gminor - Cminor
AND
THERE IS YOUR SONG IN THE KEY OF C-DORIAN!!!
If you
want to solo over it, then just use the C-Dorian scale! |
