Hold your guitar normally.

Now peak onto the fretboard and this is exactly what you would see...

The names of the open strings (thinner to thicker) are EBGDAE

So if you just strum the open strings of your guitar (one-by-one), then it should sound like...E B G D A E...this tuning is the most common way to tune a guitar and is the most commonly used.

The other tunings that I will show you (later on) are easier - but you MUST know how to play in standard tuning in order to understand those other tunings well.
