TIMING IN MUSIC

Before you begin this chapter, I suggest you visit MetronomeOnline.com

Do you know what a metronome is? It's an instrument that ticks at regular intervals...just like the seconds-hand on a clock.

The only difference is that it can be set to different speeds. Let's assume that we set the metronome to tick like this:

1&2&3&4&1&2&3&4...

While it is ticking we can strum along in many different ways.

Now you obviously aren't going to constantly be playing with a metronome. Use it for now as a tool that will help you to get a sense of timing.

After that you can gradually start keeping time "in your head", or by tapping your foot.

Nonetheless, I do advise you to at least once during your practice sessions to play and practice along with a metronome.

There's no point going into anything more complex. Just visit MetronomeOnline.com and let their metronome keep time while you come up with new patterns!
